Avery nodded in understanding. She’d trained her horses on her own though she’d had a lot of help with Fancy since she’d only been twelve when she got the mare. Fancy had been a great learning experience for her. Though she’d helped her parent’s work with horses before those horses had never been temperamental and high strung Thoroughbred ex-racehorses like Fancy. The blonde took all the falls and bruises with a good attitude because this time it was different, Fancy was all her own and that made it more meaningful to the scrawny pre-teen.

Cole’s question surprised her and her eyes widened. This boy whom she barely knew was offering to let her ride his horse. She gave a friendly smile in response to his voice that was quiet and shy, and nodded. “Sure.” And then an idea struck her. She didn’t know how he would react so she started out tentatively, “How do you feel about riding tandem bareback?”

Cole couldn't help but smile softly as he saw the shock on Avery's face. He loved seeing that kind of pleased shock on someone's face. That made him feel good, although he couldn't figure out what had made him ask if she wanted to ride. He had a feeling it had something to do with the spill he had just taken. Although he was feeling better, and Secret was an easier ride than Saturday, and he knew that Secret would be fine, and for some reason, he trusted Avery, even though he had just met her about 20 minutes ago, he already felt as though he had known her for a while. He smiled and nodded and said, "Great" as he heard that Avery said that she would ride him.

He had turned around to go and get Secret's stuff out of the tackroom when he heard Avery's suggestion. He thought about it and then shrugged and said, "We can do that if you want, Secret wouldn't mind not going out to the arena for one day in his life I'm sure..." He looked around and quickly found a bareback pad and then he found Secret's bridle and then brought the stuff out and hung it on his door before grabbing his halter and led him out into the crossties and quickly brushed him down before throwing the pad on and then putting the bridle on and then said, "So, are you ready?"

Avery remained standing by the door as Cole led the stallion out and put the bareback pad on him. Tacking up was always so much quicker when you were planning on riding bareback, and if she could she’d do it more often if not for the fact the Fancy had very painful withers and Prince was most often being conditioned for upcoming shows. She smiled in anticipation when he had finished and asked her if she was ready. “Yeah. Let’s go.” She said as they walked out of the barn. “You should probably take the reins.” She commented. After all she’d never ridden this horse and she somehow did not think that the first ride should be bareback with another person outside a ring; it just didn’t seem like a good idea.

It was lucky there was a mounting block outside, for all persons heading out on trails she assumed, because mounting bareback wasn’t that easy for her. Once Cole was situated she reached out a hand and was pleased when he took it and helped her up. A little shyly she wrapped her arms around his waist and settled in the horses rhythm. She pushed the thoughts out of her mind of how this was just a little awkward and smiled. Riding bareback was just one of those things you couldn’t help but enjoy doing.

Cole smiled and nodded slowly as he heard what Avery said. He knew that he should take the reins, seeing as how it was his horse and everything, but he found himself completely trusting the riding ability of Avery. She seemed very knowledgeable about horses, and Secret didn't tend to pull any crap anyway. He shrugged as he looked at her and said, "Sure, if that's what you want..." He qucikly glanced at her, finding himself wondering if she was slightly nervous or not. He knew that when he rode a new horse, he was always slightly nervous, no matter how much experience he had. He had just proven that outside with Saturday throwing him like a novie rider.

He smiled as they got back outside, and Secret pranced eagerly alongside of his teenage friend, but a quick word from Cole made him stop instantly. Cole smiled to himself as they stopped beside the mounting block. For some reason this was all so familiar, yet unfamiliar to Cole at the same time. He had ridden bareback of course, but only once with a girl, and not just any girl, his first true love, Stacey. He quickly put that to the back of his mind and got on Secret, steadying him as he tried to move off and then once everything was situated he helped Avery up. He smiled softly at the feeling of her arms around his waist, but he didn't say anything. He nudged Secret into a walk and the Quarter Horse stepped out obediently and they were on there way.

Cole sighed contently as they walked through the trail that ran through the property. It had been a long time since he had just let himself enjoy a ride like this. He was usually training horses for something, whether it be a big race, or a big event or show. He didn't usually have time to just be with his horse and just be having fun. Of course he loved having Avery with him, it was just so nice to not be training over jumps for a second time that day. Don't get him wrong, he liked it, but it got kind of boring when you did it day after day and didn't do anything fun. After a few moments he turned to Avery and asked, "You ready to try a trot? Well, I mean a jog, seeing as how he'll go slow if I ask him to.."

It was beautiful, the trails around Agota, and that beauty was always greater when on the back of a horse instead of on foot. Avery took a deep breath of the fresh air and smiled. Today was a very nice day; the humidity wasn’t unbelievably high like usual and the sun though shining felt warm and comfortable on her skin. As she looked around she just couldn’t imagine her world anymore without this place. It had become a part of her daily life as much as the farm back home had; though it couldn’t be expected that it wouldn’t have, after all where there was horses there was Avery. The feel of Secret’s body beneath her allowed her to completely relax as she sat behind Cole. There was just something about the way a horse felt beneath her, just its body with no saddle in between.

As Cole spoke her smile brightened. “Definitely, and whenever you want to pick of a canter go ahead.” She said with a great deal of enthusiasm. “I mean who cares about going slow?” she asked with an evident note of teasing in her voice as she winked. As Cole urged the stallion into a trot Avery settled her body into the bouncing gait with ease. The sitting trot had not been a skill she acquired naturally and it had taken her months of practice before she had perfected it enough to show off in the dressage ring – in a saddle of course. Now doing it bareback had been even more difficult and slowly but surely she had gotten the hang of it. She tightened her arms ever so slightly, not wanting to put to much pressure on with her legs, in case the horse decided it was his cue to canter and Cole was not expecting it.

As the wind rushed by her softly and she held on to the boy in front of her she recalled cool autumn afternoons back at home. Galloping through fields with her brother and her friends. A time when her home had been in perfect harmony… She found herself thinking about home a lot these days, but now was not the time to do that. The blonde had no intention of ruining the ride by making herself miserable so she twisted her lips back into a smile and laughed.

Cole smirked slightly and quietly nudged Secret into a jog. At first the horse started off a bit fast, but a slight, gentle tug on the reins quickly brought Secret down to a nice, slow jog. He smiled softly and then let himself settle down. He had always loved Secret's jog. He had trained his horse to go both English and Western, which was kind of good, and kind of bad. Sometimes Secret got it in his head that he wanted to go slow, and not go at an English pace. The black haired teen smile and just let the horse go. He turned his head towards her and then said, "Ok, I get it. You like to go faster, good, so do I.." He smirked slightly to himself and then quietly asked Secret to canter. The horse responded beautifully by cantering right out, but Cole kept his reins tight, just incase Secret decided to be a jerk or decided that there was something scary on the trail.

He easily sat to Secret's nice canter, and asked him with his body posistion to slow it down just a little. The bay Quarter Horse obeyed his rider without the slighest hesitation and continued on. Cole could feel the muscles of his beloved horse underneath him, and although he could usually feel some muscle during their riding sessions, riding bareback was the best. He loved to feel every move that his horse was taking, and it helped him feel if Secret was off in even the slightest way. That was something that he couldn't normally do with a saddle on. He sighed contently and then they came upon an open feild. The black haired teen pulled Secret up and the bay stallion halted and waited for his next cue. Cole looked around, gazing adoringly at landscape. He didn't get to see much of that in Kentucky, especially living around a track and alot of houses.

After a moment of gazing, he smiled and gently patted Secret on the neck before turning back to Avery and giving her a quick smirk before saying, "Hold on.." After he felt her hands around his waist a little tighter he nudged Secret into a canter, and then let the stallion go into a gallop and laughed out loud as he felt the warm wind blowing through his hair. Secret ran with fluid steps, and Cole could tell that his bay horse loved this almost as much as he did.

“That’s good.” She responded with a laugh. Avery enjoyed the canter best bareback, when she was in a saddle it was great but when nothing separated her and her horse during that smooth rocking horse rhythm it was unsurpassable. It was just something that gave you a feeling that couldn’t be beat. It gave her the impression of flying, of being free. As Cole brought his horse down to a halt and looked around Avery waited expectantly, already tightening her hold around his waste. She could guess what was coming. The stallion picked up the gallop perfectly and the blonde laughed as the wind tore through her curls as they blew out behind her.

As the trees surrounding the field and the grasses below Secret’s pounding hooves seemed to blend together Avery recognized one gap on the far edge. She’d found it on a trail expedition with Fancy a few weeks ago and had been waiting for a warmer day. She leaned forward so that Cole would be able to hear her. “See that break in the trees over there?” she asked not waiting for a response. “Go through it.” She said hoping that he would.

If he did he’d find a small pond glistening in the sunlight. Avery enjoyed swimming and after their high-speed bareback ride in the blazing sun she was getting warm. Although eh barely knew this boy she liked him. He was nice and she had a feeling he wouldn’t mind going for a swim.

Cole smirked slightly as the wind continued to blow through his hair. He laughed to himself and almost let go of the reins, but decided against it. Although Secret would probably continue to go straight, Cole didn't want to chance it. Secret was used to galloping anyway, and Cole could tell that the stallion liked it. He hadn't been out for a good gallop in a while, mostly it had been arena work. Cole felt somewhat bad about that. He knew that although Seret enjoyed their arena work, he also needed to have a little fun, just like go did. Cole finally let his mind go blank and just listened to the pounding of the bay Quarter Horse's hooves on the grass.

Cole then heard someone talking to him, and barely registered what Avery had said, but noticed what she had been talking about. With the slightest touch on the reins, he steered Secret towards the gap and then slowed him down as they entered the trail. Secret walked excitedly, pumped from his gallop, but still listening to Cole perfectly. He glanced around and they suddenly came to a pond. Cole couldn't help but smile as he looked at it. He had to admit, it was getting out out, especially since he was wearing jeans.

He quickly hopped off Secret's back and looked around while Secret stood there. He smirked slightly and then watched as Avery got down. He pulled the bareback bad off and then quickly unbridled Secret, took the reins and the bit off, and put it back on as a halter type of thing. Secret deserved a break and Cole wanted him to be able to come swimming with them, or munch grass. He smirked slightly at Secret and then gently gave him a pat and then said, "Come on boy!" before taking off towards the pond, the bay looking at him for a moment before following his owner at a trot.

Avery couldn’t help but be a little surprised when Cole so readily went for the idea of a swim. A broad smile covered her face as she watched him fix the horse’s bridle so he to could go for a swim. Her smile turned into a laugh as she watched boy and horse head for the water. She couldn’t believe Cole was actually going to get in wearing jeans; he’d be soaked for hours. Then suddenly she looked down at her own attire. Her beige breeches were an expensive pair and jumping into a murky pond while wearing them just did not seem to be a good idea.

The blonde bit down on her lower lip as she pondered for a minute. As she reached a decision she slipped off her boots and her riding pants and tugged her polo over her head. Clad in a pair of black boy shorts underwear and a white cami she ran laughing into the pond. “Ahh its cold!” she exclaimed as the water hit her bare skin. But slowly as she walked into the water up to her waste, all the sand and dirt at the bottom sliding between her toes, it became cool and relaxing. She looked over at Cole and secret and smiled, "Having fun?"

Cole smiled softly as he watched Secret trot after him into the water. Cole looked at the bay again and shook his head. He could remember a time back when he had first gotten Secret that the stallion hadn't really liked the water. There had been a pond, exactly like this one, close to Cole's house, and he and his brother were always going there to swim. Secret had always been reluctant to go in, and it had taken much coaxing on Cole's part to get him to go in on his own, without being forced. After the first few times, Secret had finally began going into the water on his own without Cole having to coax him.

Cole smiled slightly and then frowned as he felt the cold water moving up his body and then he had to stop himself from saying something about how cold it was, because he didn't want to sound like a baby. He smirked slightly as he turned back to look at Secret and then sent some water over his way and got him wet. Secret looked at his teenage friend indignantly before pawing the water and getting the black haired kid soaking wet. Cole looked over at Avery as he heard the girl's voice and smirked slightly before saying, "Yah, loads of fun, even Secret is having fun. What about you?"
