"To the outdoor it is then. Barney's about as sane as they come over fences, however he's only in Second Year Green Working Hunter. So he does have his moments, where you will have to guide him. Even though we'll be staying small until I see how you ride over fences, what's your max height?" asked Kayleigh as they reached the ring. She knew Barney was capable of taking fences a great deal higher than 2'6 it wasn't likely that she'd be letting Dean take them over that height this time out.
(OCC: Sorry it's so short but I figured it was a good place for Dean to reply)

Dean couldn't help but smile softly as he heard Kayleigh. That slightly reminded him of home because that's what his mother had used to say when he and his brother had gotten their horses ready to ride and were ready to lead them outside. He still sat easily in the saddle, loving the horse he was riding. He looked around at the surrondings and took a deep breath. He loved being out in nature, even though being in the barn was first to that. He loved being in the barn even more than being outside. He looked over at Kayleigh as he heard her voice and shrugged slightly before saying, "Well, Rio and I jump just about 3', and I used to jump peoples horses for them higher than that.."

They slowed the horses to a walk as they entered the ring. "That was a fairly decent stretch of trotting to get here, but go ahead and take a few more laps of trot before asking for a canter."said Kayleigh as she squeezed the black gelding once more into a trot. Kyle moved off well but Kayleigh had her work cut out for her today in keeping the gelding at a steady trot.
As Kyle started relaxing more and more Kayleigh was able to glance out across the ring where Dean was trotting with Barney. The other gelding was moving out nicely enough, though not the big sweeping trot that had earned Barney some notice, in the pleasure classes, among the local circuits.
"He can give you more trot than that, soften your hands, loosen your reins a bit and encourage him to move off your leg a little more, he'll move out right enough" said Kayleigh who had brought Kyle back down to a walk as she watched.

Dean smiled softly to himself and gently pulled back on the reins as they entered the arena. He quickly glanced around, trying to take everything in at once. The more he saw of this place, the more he was beginning to think that he would really enjoy being here and training with Kayleigh. Sure it wasn't his own barn back home, but still, this was a great facility, and he knew he would learn alot here. Dean heard Kayleigh's instructions and nodded slowly before gently nudging Barney, who immediatly moved into the faster gait.
As Barney moved into the faster gait, Dean automatically began posting to the trot as he had been taught. He had done it so many times now that he had just began do it without really thinking about it. He continued to go around the arena until he heard Kayleigh's voice. He listened to her carefullly and then nodded slowly. He then quickly loosened his reins a little and softened his hands. He knew that he could have hard hands, but then again, he wasn't used to riding nice lesson horses to ride.
After he had done that he quietly and gently urged him to move on his leg a little more and then he could feel the trot become even more sweeping as Barney extended somewhat. He felt a smile come onto his face. After about 5 more laps around the arena he gently urged Barney into a canter, which he immediatly did and Dean smiled as he sat there. He loved the feeling of the canter, and wished he could just do it all day.

Kayleigh watched for a few more moments as Dean heeded her advice and the big gelding responded in earnest. Seeing as everything was going smoothly she, with a slight squeeze, sent her own mount back into motion. With one more squeeze the gelding moved out smoothly into a sweeping trot that was much nicer than the first rendition. She alternated between sitting and posting for the next few laps and doing numerous circles.
Finally she asked him to canter and his response was explosive as he bucked almost immediately and his gait was a choppy fast motion. Immediately Kayleigh reacted and began using all her aides to smooth out the slightly erratic gelding. It was a battle for dominance and eventually the black gelding ceded and Kayleigh made a mental note to begin riding Kyle daily once more.
After a few laps she brought him back to a trot and calling for Dean to do the same. "Alright let's canter this direction and then I'll set up the jumps" she said before cuing her gelding for the canter once more, this time without the great battle of wills, it seemed for today the war was over.

Dean smiled softly, not being able to believe that he was already learning stuff here. Then again, he had never had horses like Barney who had varying speeds of a trot. He was used to riding the horses for pleasure that just went like they were supposed, at the speed that most judges like to see. Since Dean didn't ride them at any time but shows, he had never been able to work with them like Kayleigh had obviously worked with Barney over the years. He finally brought the gelding back down to a trot and then finally to a walk as he reached down and patted him on the neck. He smirked slightly before saying, "Good boy, that's the way to do it.."
Barney responded to Dean's voice by bobbing his head, as if saying that he knew exactly how well he had just done. After a moment Dean took his attention off Barney and turned it to the black warmblood that Kayleigh was riding. He still couldn't figure out exactly what was drawing him to the horse. The horse looked exactly like Jet, but that couldn't be the only reason that he liked him. There was just something about the way he acted. Finally Dean knew what it was. It was his attitude. Dean loved a horse that presented a challenge.
Dean finally was able to tear his eyes off the black gelding when he heard Kayleigh speaking to him. He nodded slowly and then reversed Barney and put him into the forward trot that he had gotten him into before, and after a lap or two he pushed him into the canter and once again sat cool and collected in the saddle, enjoying the ride.

With this direction ultimately turning out for the better, Kayleigh halted her mount in the center of the ring and swung down easily from the saddle. Thankfully the jumps were almost completely assembled with their components having simply been moved to rest near their respective standards.
From years of practice she was very adept at assembling jumps while hanging onto a horse especially one that stood quiet on the ground. It was the one thing she absolutely couldn't stand it was bad ground manners and the horses that passed through her hands came out with solid manners at least and at best they would even ground tie.
The small expanse of jumps took a bit of time to set up and only hit about 2'3 for the max of them at the moment. She swung back up with ease and walked Kyle over to where Dean and Barney now stood.
"Alright, like I said he's still green so he may need a bit of guidance and maybe a bit of reassurance every so often however he generally won't charge the fences. Start with the small vertical for a warm up, then we'll add the other fences." said Kayleigh as she settled back to watch. Barney was a good steady mount for a greenie, and as far as Kayleigh was concerned a decent mount to use in what could be termed an evaluation ride.

Dean once again found himself watching the black warmblood as they switched directions and cantered. He would glance over at the pair every so often, and smiled softly when he realized that Kyle seemed to be behaving himself pretty well going this direction. Dean figured that one of two things had caused Kyle to change his attitude. Either he liked this direction better than the previous one, or he had figured out that he was not going to win the battle agianst Kayleigh. Dean finally shrugged and just guessed that it was probably was a combonation of the two.
They finally broke down to a trot and then a walk and then he halted Barney on the railing and loosened his reins. The bay extended his neck and then afer a moment Dean nudged him into a walk and Barney strode off easily with the loose reins. He smiled to himself and quietly watch and Kayleigh worked diligently to get the fences up. He looked them over and smiled softly when he realized there wasn't any more than 2' 3''. He was kind of glad for that, seeing as how he hadn't jumped any higher than that in a while. He hadn't done higher than that since the last time he had shown his friend's jumping Thoroughbred. He and Rio didn't jump that high either. They did once in a while, jumped higher than 2'3'' that is.
He listened intently to Kayleigh and nodded slowly. Barney didn't seem like a green horse, but Dean knew that Kayleigh was only giving him help. He looked at the vertical that Kayleigh wanted him to try. It wasn't that big. He urged Barney into a canter and then did a circle before heading towards the jump. He smiled as they got closer. He felt the bay hesitate slightly, but a little leg pressure from Dean got him to keep going and they cleared the jump with inches to spare.

She kept her eye trained on the pair and watched them go. In her mind she anazlyzed every nuance of their ride. She saw a few things form wise that could be fixed but overall nothing bad, and the circle before the fence had been a plus in her books.
"Good job with him, smart thinking with the circle before hand, it really got him to listen to you. He gave you quite the effort over that fence and can go plenty higher so you'll add the outside line in addition to the verticle for your next go around. Let me get this brute over the vertical first and then you can head out again" said Kayleigh patting her own mounts neck affectionatly as she spoke.
She sent her own mount off into a smart trot and then circled, much like she would to begin an over fences round, picking up the canter halfway through.
As soon as he spied the fence Jyle's ears perked forward and he moved to pick up the pace. Kayleigh adjusted him slightly so they'd meet the distance, they soared over it neatly. Kayleigh praised the gelding as she brought him back to a walk and then she signnaled to Dean to once again go ahead.

Dean smiled softly once again, glad that they had completed the jump. He had expected to do well, but it was a whole different thing when you actually did. He knew he probably hadn't looked his best, but hey, what did you expect? He had been out of commission for the past couple of weeks, with getting stuff ready to come, and then Rio turned up lame the day before their last show of the season. Dean couldn't honestly say that he had been dissappointed. He had thought it was better that way, then they wouldn't put the stress on his legs only a few days before shipping him to a new farm. Rio had seemed a little antsy because of not going to the show, but Dean had worked with him to get him over it, and they had been happy.
Dean smiled at Kayleigh as he heard her praise. He knew that he must have looked really decent, to get a compliment. He nodded slowly and said, "Thanks, he felt great going over that jump, like it was nothing at all..." Although Dean know that it always took effort to go over a jump, no matter how high it was, Barney had made it seem like there had been nothing to it. He nodded as he heard the instructions. He watched intently Kayleigh took the black warmblood gelding over the jump. Dean had to admit, the gelding did have nice form, but he guessed some of that was in part because of the person who was on his back, but Kyle did seem to have some natural talent.
He noticed Kayleigh signaling to him, and quickly collected his reins and nudged Barney into a canter. He made a circle again, giving himself and Barney a chance to get working like a team and get themselves collected. He then took the veritcal again and they soared over it with no hesitation. Then they moved onto the outside line. Barney hesitated once or twice, and in the end they took down a total of two poles, which Dean thought wasn't to mad for their first time.

"Nice, add a little more leg going over the line and ride a little deeper into the corner coming off the diagonal. It'll set you up straighter on your approach for the first of the line." said Kayleigh, "After I go I want you to take the same three fences again and then maybe we'll add more"
With Dean's nod of conformation Kayleigh squeezed the black gelding into a floaty forward trot and made her circle asking for the canter halfway through. She aimed the gelding for the vertical and Kyle took it with enthusiasm and the pair headed for the line.
Kayleigh shortened her reins a fraction of an inch and rode him deep into the corner. She felt him drifting and corrected him with her legs. They cleared the first fence easily and took a long spot to the second fence. But she was grateful for the lack of fireworks and rode over to where Dean was and gave him the go ahead.

Dean smiled softly as he and Barney cleared the last fence. He smirked and gently patted Barney's neck, letting the gelding know how much he appriciated the bay taking care of him over those jumps. He murmurred "Good boy. See, that's the way it's done.." He looked at Kayleigh as he heard what she said. He smiled softly to her and quickly thought back to the ride. He had a habit of doing that when he was riding. He always thought back to his ride whenever people gave him suggestions. He nodded and then said, "Sounds good to me..." With that, he let his reins drop to the buckle as he made Barney sit in the middle and watched as Kayleigh took on the jumps.
Dean watched the instructor take the line of jumps, but instead of watching the way Kyle jumped this time, he watched the way Kayleigh rode. He knew that by watching a professional like Kayleigh he could gain alot of knowledge on the right way to ride. He continued to watch and once they were done he couldn't help but smile. Both the rider and the horse had looked great going over the jumps. He smirked slightly and called out to Kayleigh, "You guys looked great going over that set of jumps.."
He collected up his reins and took a deep breath before he put Barney into a trot and did a circle, pushing the bay into a canter halfway through the circle. He then took the three jumps again, making sure to give Barney more leg. Then on the diagnol he went deeper into the corner and found that he did come out straighter to the jump. He smiled softly as they cleared the last jump and then he stopped the bay and looked at Kayleigh, wondering what she would say.
