Kaitlyn had barely even talked to Doug. She had been argued with him a few days before and the storm had yet blown over. They had both been out of line though she could easily admit it was her fault. He was only trying to lighten the mood and she had just made it worse. Shaking her head, she leaned up against the rail as she watched a horse go around the course. She had already ridden Dakota and the mare had gone extremely well. Now she was waiting for the Preliminary course to be set up. The course was only at Training at the moment.
Her peace was interupted by laughter. She turned her head only to see Doug standing there.
"Are you going to still kill me or has the storm passed?"
Kate smiled softly as she shook her head. "The storm has passed."
He nodded, "Good I was worried about my life there for a moment."
"I'm not a murderer just someone who has a habit of chucking brushes."
"You have pretty good aim, plenty of practice?" Doug laughed again.
"Just a tad, what can I saw, I needed to practice if I was ever going to defend myself from those annoying pests," she shot a look at him.
"Woah, missy, are you calling me a pest?"
Kate laughed as she looked down at ther watch. "It is time to start getting ready, and yes you are a pest."
Doug clutched his chest, "Ouch, that hurt."
She rolled her eyes as she started to walk off and Doug soon jogged beside her to catch up. "I do have feelings you know."

"So," Kaitlyn broke the silence as the pair stepped from the dirt onto their barn's concrete aisle. "Do you think you'll maintain your lead on me?" A smug smile crossed her lips.
Without hesitation, Doug sang back, "not a chance!" His glistening eyes met hers before together they ducked into the tack stall, the scene of the crime. Yes, the lad had let that little outbreak roll right off his back. He had bared witness to many of his own sister's hormonal tangents, and could easily say their effect had long ago grown dull against his skin. If Kate wanted to remain huffy, Doug would just have to antagonize her. And if she wanted to calm down, that was cool, too. Doug would just have to antagonize her. Hey, he had already been labeled a pest. The redhead considered it obligatory to live up to his name.
"And you know what?" He confided, pulling his saddle and pads out of their tack trunk and proceeding to follow Kaitlyn to their adjacent stalls. "It doesn't bother me. Ever since that Dressage test on Indiana Jones here, I've stopped caring. Best test I've ever ridden, at the highest level to boot. That was someone telling me 'Kid, suicide's an option, but don't pursue it yet.'"
He double checked the gelding. It had only been fifteen minutes since he had last seen him, but all the same Doug made sure that he was still squeaky clean and that his braids were still neatly secured. Indy passing inspection, the boy headed back to the Fox River tack stall, grabbing the rest of his gear, and Kaitlyn laughed at his retreating back.
"Come on," he managed to catch amidst the stable noise, "you don't want to end the division with a bang, too? I know you aren't too happy with how Keegan did."
On his way out, Doug peered into her stall, but she was too busy fastening boots around Tabby's white legs to notice him. "Quite the contrary, miss," he corrected, slipping into Indy's stall to finish tacking up, "I was just thrilled with Master Keegan's performance - it went no better or worse than I had expected. And no, after what I just did with Keegan in the jumper ring, I have no desire to go out with a bang. I just thank the heavens no one got hurt."
Mister Candler was of course referring to the jumper round for the Training division he had ridden not so long ago on his original lesson horse. Something had gone wrong early on and the boy had managed to demolish the first fence, a wall made of red foam bricks. The clock had stopped for the fence to be reset, and several penalties later, the unscathed duo completed the course with only one other rail down.
"As long as I at least manage to leave all of the jumps standing, I will be very pleased indeed." They both laughed, heading back to their gear one last time to fetch their own riding apparel. Doug slipped on his navy coat before rummaging the tack trunk tray for a few little items. Grabbing his prize, he turned to Kate. "Want one?" He offered, waving a fortune cookie in front of her face by its clear plastic wrapper. She wrinkled her nose in response, and a shrugging Doug placed one in each of his coat pockets.
"Waaalk this waay," he croaked flatly, ushering them back out with helmet in his gloved hands. The two gathered up their respective horses and headed into the war zone. Knowing Kayleigh wanted to meet them outside of the Center Indoor with her own mount if she got the chance, her two students mounted up, all the better location to spot her from. The speakers buzzed in the distance, informing the masses that the placings for both the show jumping phase and the overall division of Training level were about to be announced.
Kate seemed much more interested in the announcer than Doug did, who let his reins rest on the steadfast Indy's neck. When both of them realized he had tied for last in stadium, the girl seemed to bow her head while the boy threw a fist in the air. And when the entire show populace was informed of the fact that Doug Candler had placed last in Training, a similar reaction took place.
"You don't seem too heartbroken," Kaitlyn noted.
"I'm really not," Dougie insisted. "Sure as hell beats getting eliminated. And besides, I'm not worried about what color my ribbon is. If I wanted a blue that bad, the little ikeman in me would spend five bucks on a box of them rather than go through all the expense of trying to get one here. We screwed up sometimes...a lot of times...but we fixed as many mistakes as we could and all that. And I got to harass you and the Lass for three days some couple hundred miles away from home, so what more could I ask for?"
The girl eyed him warily. "Doug, sit still," she ordered, fearing he was gesticulating far too much for being on a horse's back.
"Oh, fine," he relented, pulling at one of the fortune cookies in his pocket. Crumpling the wrapper, he cracked the orange shell open and retrieved the message inside. Clearing his throat he read aloud, "'You are talented in many ways.' Aww! Shucks, ain't it the truth, ain't it the truth?" His narration earned an eye roll from his fellow competitor, prompting him to noisily throw the cookie into his mouth. He replaced the papers in his hand with the other fortune cookie.
"Ahem," he began, having opened this one, too. "'Disregard previous cookie'? Oh, snap." After a sneering bit of laughter on Kaitlyn's part, the loudspeaker cracked again. Apparently Doug, amidst his fanfaring, had missed quite a few events. Now a rider was being called to the arena, and the rider who was Kate was being called on deck.
"Oh come on, Kay-tay! Hit a homer!" He proclaimed, clapping. The girl began heading into the arena, and giving up in his quest for Kayleigh, Dougie decided to follow her in to better see the sights.

She scowled back at him. There he went again embarrassing her, was that all he was good at? She smiled though before she halted Tabby. The mare had been going extremely well for her and now they were second overall. It was better than the fifth she had taken earlier. Though she didn't blame Dakota for that.
Her name was soon called in the arena. Another bottle of nerves exploded in her stomach but she just had to merely push them down. Asking for a trot, Kate took a quick scan around the arena. Kayleigh was standing by the rail on the opposite side of the ring and Dougie was actually standing by the gate watching from the saddle. All her concentration was soon on the ride ahead of her as they started to pick up a canter. Preliminary heights were nothing for her.
Tabby easily cleared the first few fences with no trouble. Katie had a good feeling for the rest of the fences as they quickly and accurately cleared each one. There wasn't one point in the round where she felt uncomfortable or nervous. As they added the last fence to their clear round, Katie couldn't help but smile as they crossed the finish line. That had to be the best round she had put forth into a course yet. If everything went as she hoped, she had just claimed either the red or the blue ribbon and accumalated plenty of points. Just what she wanted in the beginning of the season.
Walking Tabby out of the ring, she halted her right beside Doug. "So, think you can beat that?" She smirked as she dismounted but kept beside him.
